Are you wondering if you really need a drainage solution for your garden?

If your drainage problems aren’t that bad, you may be hoping that they’ll go away by themselves, rather than having to invest in a potentially costly solution. You might also be wondering if it’s really going to be worth the money.

Unfortunately, as an experienced landscaper, I know that if your garden has drainage issues, it could deteriorate over time, and eventually require even more costly measures to fix.

So, how do you tell if you really need a drainage solution for your garden? Here are four main signs.

1. Your garden has regular puddling in certain areas

One of the biggest signs your garden isn’t draining properly is that you usually have puddles in certain areas of your garden. This water just collects and takes much longer to drain, despite the fact that it hasn’t rained for days. It also stops the grass growing as well in these areas.

2. Your garden seems constantly muddy in all weather

Another big complaint we get from customers is that their garden is constantly muddy. So, if you find yourself avoiding using your garden because you know you’ll end up with muddy feet, and you can’t let your children or pets play outside, you’ll know there’s a problem.

3. Water seems to be collecting in just one area of your garden

This tends to be a common issue for gardens that sit on a slope. It essentially means that all the water is draining to just one area of your garden, leaving a big puddle in just one area, and causing damage to your garden.

4. Your grass always feels very soft or squishy underfoot

Finally, you may just be aware that your grass always feels soft or squishy, regardless of the weather. You may have muddy patches.

Advice from an experienced landscaper

If you’re unsure about what to do regarding your garden’s drainage, the best advice I can give you is to speak to a professional landscaper. They should be able to help advise you on the best solution, depending on how you want to use your garden. You can also do some research online to fully explore your options.

TIP: You can read about why artificial grass is one of the most effective drainage solutions for your garden in our recent blog post.

One of our customers asked us to visit their property as they were suffering from puddling in certain areas of their lawn. However, they weren’t sure which solution would be best for them, or if they really needed a drainage solution at all. They advised it was only really bad during heavy spells, and still got use out of their garden in the summer.

They enjoyed the green of the grass in their garden, but were just sick of not being able to use it all year round, and the muddy paw-prints their pets brought in when it was rainy. They also had shaded areas in their garden.

Upon inspection, we advised the customer towards artificial grass as it was a low-maintenance solution that would solve all of their problems – as well as being cost-effective.

It would not only sort out their puddling, but also meant the owners AND their pets would be able to enjoy the garden all year round. Plus, the shaded areas in their garden would no longer be an issue.

Conclusion

I hope you’ve enjoyed reading. If you are experiencing any of the problems above, I’d recommend investing in a drainage solution for your garden. A professional landscaper should be able to inspect your lawn and suggest the best solution for you, based on your own needs.

Artificial grass can be a great solution for drainage woes, but it’s not for everybody. Thoroughly research your options and choose a reputable company to help advise you.
