Are you worried about whether weeds will still be able to grow in your artificial lawn?

If weeds are a big annoyance in your garden, you’ll probably want to know whether an artificial lawn can help prevent them. In fact, it may even be one of the reasons you’re considering investment in artificial grass for your garden.

The good news is that as long as you give artificial grass a bit of TLC, weeds shouldn’t be a big concern. And it should definitely be a massive improvement from your natural lawn, as many of our customers can attest!

As a professional artificial grass installer, let me explain more below.

Can weeds still grow in your artificial lawn?

Technically, yes. However, any weeds that you see on artificial grass are merely surface weeds, due to airborne seeds from birds, or damp leaves that have been lying on your grass. These surface weeds can be gently pulled out, or disturbed by using a stiff brush or leaf blower.

Due to the sub-base that should be installed with most good quality artificial grass products, including a hardcore base and weed barrier, it would be very difficult for the weeds to grow through this.

How to prevent surface weeds on your artificial lawn

By carrying out regular maintenance, you can prevent the growth of surface weeds on your artificial lawn. One of the ways you can do this is by regularly brushing your grass with a stiff brush to remove any leaves and airborne seeds. Also, cutting back any trees or hedges that are hanging over your lawn should help, along with a gentle, pet-friendly weed killer once or twice per year.

Advice from an experienced installer

Most good artificial lawn installers will advise you on how best to keep your lawn in a good condition all year round. They may also send over a ‘Dos & Don’ts’ list of how to help protect your investment.

If you do find yourself bothered by surface weeds, I suggest buying a gentle, pet-friendly weed killer. Only use this when needed – perhaps once or twice per year. If the above steps are followed, surface weeds should never become an issue.

We’ve only ever been contacted about surface weeds a couple of times, from customers whose lawns were surrounded by trees, and with the above advice, they were able to easily overcome the issue.

TIP: You can also buy various artificial grass cleaners, such as the Easi-reoderiser, but there are plenty of these on the market to help with any pet smells.

Conclusion

Thanks for reading – by now you should have a better idea of the type of weeds you may experience with your artificial lawn. Luckily, the only kind of weed you should have to deal with in terms of your artificial lawn, are surface weeds. These are easily removed by simply pulling out or using a stiff brush. A gentle weed killer can be applied to your lawn when necessary.
