Are you looking for the best low-maintenance solution for your garden that’s also affordable?

Perhaps you’re already considering options such as paving and artificial grass. But which is best for your budget?

Well, as an experienced landscaper, I’ve fitted both of these solutions in many different properties. And both can cost around the same price – the main thing is choosing the solution you’re going to get the most use out of, as both of these are very different options.

Maybe this blog can help narrow things down for you. Let me explain more, below.

The cost of artificial grass vs paving

Good quality artificial grass costs on average around £55 – £65 + VAT per square metre (supplied and fitted). This is on par with a medium-priced paving, however more expensive paving options can cost anywhere up to £100 per square metre – not including installation costs!

Another slightly pricier option than artificial grass is a resin-bound surface. This is a fully permeable system – so just like artificial grass, it’s great for combating drainage issues. It also has around the same life expectancy of 15 – 20 years. This potentially means more long-term value than other solutions, however prices can start at £80 per square meter + VAT (supplied and fitted).

Which is the best choice for you?

It’s true that budget does become a big factor when looking for the best solution for your garden. However, there are often a lot of other considerations at play, such as whether you’re looking to combat drainage, and how you plan to use your garden. For instance, you may be looking for a safe surface for children and pets, or a patio area for entertaining guests.

When choosing the best solution for your garden, think about the value you’ll be getting back. Maintenance may also be an issue. For instance, artificial grass typically requires less maintenance than a patio or paving, so less work involved. A resin-bound surface requires around the same maintenance as artificial grass, however it is slightly more costly.

Tips to help stick to your budget

Got a tight budget, but want a solution that will provide the most value? To cut down on costs, you do have a few different options.

You may wish to combine two solutions, such as artificial grass and a resin-bound area to really keep maintenance down. Or, you could go with artificial grass and chip borders, planters or decking. There are also cheaper paving solutions available, however these will not always provide the most low-maintenance garden you may want.

Your chosen landscaper should be able to discuss your options with you, and help you come up with a custom solution that is not only good for your budget, but also means you’ll be able to get the most use out of your garden.

One of our customers had an artificial lawn fitted by us a couple of years ago, and recently got us back to quote for a resin-bound surface. It was quite a large area, and our customer wanted a low-maintenance solution to complement her lawn. It was a lot more costly than a mono block surface or other paving solution, but she loved the sharp, clean look that resin-bound achieved.

Conclusion

I hope you’ve found this blog helpful when deciding which is the best solution for your budget. Looking at paving vs artificial grass can be tough, as both of these are very different solutions and should really depend on how you want to use your garden. You can have artificial grass installed for the same cost as a medium-range paving solution for your garden.

Talk to your chosen landscaper to see if you can come up with a solution that will deliver long-term value and ensure you can get the most out of your garden. You might be surprised!
