Learn how artificial grass underlay for concrete is the perfect fake grass accompaniment to help you create a safe, soft surface that’s safe for children to play on.
Our artificial grass underlay can also help to even out the surface of your patio if slabs are slightly uneven
Are you thinking about installing artificial grass over concrete or a patio?
Fake grass can be an ideal solution for brightening up grey, dull areas and creating your ideal outdoor space. However, you may be worried that it will still mean a hard surface underneath.
Luckily, artificial grass underlay for concrete – which can also be referred to as a ‘shock pad layer’ – means that you can have a soft, spongy surface that will help protect against falls, and is more comfortable to walk on, as it’s made out of foam.
We recommend installing artificial grass underlay for concrete over all hard surfaces; including patios, paved areas, and decking. It’s also perfect for installing in play areas, schools and nurseries.
We’ve even used this underlay to install fake grass in a rugby training gym – and on putting greens! Below, you’ll find everything you need to know about this special shock pad layer, and how it’s installed.
What are the installation options for artificial grass underlay?
If your concrete or paved garden is level, and without cracks, it should be fairly straightforward to successfully install your underlay and fake grass. If you have larger cracks, your installer may recommend breaking the concrete up and carrying out a normal installation instead.
For a typical installation on top of concrete or patio, the first step would be to add drainage holes to your concrete, or ensure your grass is on a slight fall. Next, you should make sure the area is thoroughly clean. Then, an installer would add a weed barrier, before installing the foam underlay.
Fake grass underlay comes in thicknesses of 10mm, 18mm, and 25mm, and can achieve a critical fall height of 2.6m. This helps you create a safe, pleasant space that all the family can enjoy – it can also smooth out any imperfections in the concrete, or on paving slabs.
Our artificial grass underlay comes in 2m x 1m sheets that can easily slot together, before being secured in place with duct tape. Adhesive can also be used to secure the underlay to the concrete. Once the underlay is fitted, it’s cut to the size of the area, and the grass is installed and secured on top.
NOTE: Artificial grass underlay drainage isn’t as effective on its own, which is why it’s important to add drainage holes to your concrete before installation. It’s also not a good idea to let pets urinate on artificial grass with a foam underlay, as this will begin to smell.
